Dog Size Calculator
Three ways to estimate adult size: from your puppy’s current weight and age (growth curves), from both parents’ weights for a mixed breed, or from the AKC breed standard. Each gives a size class from toy to giant.
Size classes used on this site: toy (under 10 lb), small (10–22 lb), medium (22–55 lb), large (55–100 lb) and giant (over 100 lb).
How it works
From a puppy: the same growth-curve method as the puppy weight calculator (Hawthorne et al. 2004), then the adult estimate is put into a size class.
From the parents: a mixed-breed puppy usually ends up within the range of its parents’ adult weights. We show that range and its middle as a rough guide; it is not a study-based estimate.
From the breed: the AKC breed standard weight, height and life expectancy, as published on each AKC breed page.
Paw size: there is no validated paw-size method. The growth studies we use (Hawthorne 2004, Salt 2017) predict from weight and age, so we do too.

Frequently asked questions
How can I tell how big my puppy will get?
Use its current weight and age with a growth curve for its size, check the breed standard, and look at the parents if you know them. Re-check as your puppy grows.
Do big paws mean a big dog?
Not reliably. There is no validated way to predict adult size from paws. Growth studies use weight and age instead.
How big will a mixed-breed puppy get?
Usually somewhere between the two parents’ adult weights. Puppies can take after either parent, so treat it as a rough guide.
What size is a medium dog?
On this site medium means about 22–55 lb (10–25 kg) as an adult. Other charts use slightly different cut-offs; the AKC dog-age chart, for example, uses 21–50 lb.
When to see a vet
- Your puppy is growing much faster or slower than expected.
- Limping or joint pain in a growing large or giant puppy.
- Questions about the right food for a large-breed puppy.
This is an estimate for general information, not veterinary advice. Every pet is different. Ask your veterinarian before changing your pet's diet, especially for puppies, kittens, pregnant or nursing pets, seniors, or pets with health conditions.
